How might we restore the autonomy and free will for internet users? Re-linking, re-socialising and re-building for the virtuous cycle of social media?

Emerging technologies can have a huge impact on the lifestyles around us. And when we look to the future, there are a lot of reasons coming at us that raise a lot of questions for designers." What Wouldn’t You Design? "  Can we start with two examples? What would you do with the "design" of the Trans-humans, or rather, the design of intelligent robots, would act as free moral agents?  These topics represent a meaningful part of the future of service design. Therefore, this project focuses on the ethical issues of emerging technologies through a service design approach. Pay particular attention to information design on social media.

 

Nowadays, from some of the famous social issues that are happening around us, we can find that social media platforms are not only conducive to interpersonal communication, but further transformed into social forces that can cause fluctuations in the mainstream values of the public and the attitudes of individuals towards social issues, such as fake news and troll factories. From this perspective, social media has evolved to become one of the influencing factors in the decision-making field. These social media platforms use algorithms to provide users with appropriate content and group people with the same values based on each person's preferences. This Internet phenomenon, we call it the "Filter bubble". 

 

There is even a new term for the era here, called "Post-truth," which refers to the context in which emotional appeals are used to influence public opinion in relation to, or in existence of, circumstances in which facts are seen as irrelevant, or less important than personal beliefs and opinions.

 

Post-truth leads to a new form of isolation, and algorithms accelerate this phenomenon. When a website uses algorithms to selectively assume what information the user wants to see, and then gives the user information based on that assumption, then the site makes these assumptions based on information about the user, such as previous click behavior, browsing history, search history and location. Based on this, the site prefers to present only information about the user's past activities and abide by the user's past behavior. As a result, filtering bubbles lead to a significant reduction in the user's engagement with conflicting viewpoints, resulting in the user becoming informationally isolated.

 

Under the umbrella of the Internet, different eras, different cultures, different countries have formed their own filter bubbles. Each group is algorithmically manipulated through different information to understand how the world works. Because of this, filter bubbles create a group polarisation. The challenge here is: how to apply a service design approach to predict future users' online behavior on social media and provide them with a better, healthier platform to get the information they need.

To understand this, I conducted interviews and field research by visiting several AI-related exhibitions in London as a source of inspiration. Then, through brainstorming workshops with end users and experts such as magicians, AI ethicists, algorithm, data and social media experts, internet users..... . etc., I built personas from this collected user data and produced conceptual materials and user journey maps to aid the project outline. When designing the sprint week. I evaluated, tested, and selected the wireframe concept for prototyping. Finally, based on feedback from the design validation phase, I had the opportunity to conduct usability testing to optimize my concept.

  • In an era of information explosion, clear information has great power in broadcasting, making it easy for different groups to understand complex issues in short period of time, and a full understanding of issues facilitates accurate decision-making. 

  • Increasingly accurate social algorithms, based primarily on users' interests and the data they input into social media platforms, such as online behavior, effectively help expose users to the vast amount of information they are very interested in, and also deepen their trust in the platform.

  • In the age of online information feeding, people with different views are given channels to express them, and now everyone is a commentator, free to express their views, concerned about the issues that affect them within their online community. 

  • More accurate algorithms can be effective in helping users check out interesting information on social media, but current AI algorithms also are depriving us of a diverse, healthy diet of information. The impact of the filter bubble has led to a decline in diversity and boundaries between social media ecospheres, raising the level of group polarisation.

  • People generally choose to engage in dialogue with circles that share the similar viewpoints, further entrenching their existing positions but to are deaf to radically different propositions. Even though they are not aware of this, the recommendation algorithms of social media might have contributed greatly to this effect, and further social division as a side effect.

Bubblink is a breakthrough intelligent extension service designed to reduce group polarization and promote a more comprehensive understanding while browsing social media for long periods of time

 

It creates an opportunity for users to explore more of the attitudes and different viewpoints, as well as an occasion for users to learn from each other. Since the algorithm determines what you see is AI-based, each user's online version of the headline is different. It tracks users' daily views based on the source of the news and posts that people read most often. It then periodically urges the user to read something with the opposite bias.

 

As a gatekeeper for the user, the reminder function allows one to get a balanced information diet, know the source of information and the trust level. - Being a gatekeeper while people browse the internet, this service should not interfere with the original function of social media. - Reward those opinions that have merit, the pluralistic understanding of the public, and also use the power of the masses to investigate reality.

In terms of technical implementation, the analysis of modern technology can be done through Explainable AI. NLP (Natural Language Processing) is used in English semantic analysis to determine various meaningful categories, reports, information, summaries, etc. from the cluttered data.

 

Natural language processing (NLP) is an attempt to enable artificial intelligence to understand the words written and spoken by human beings, and NLP will first decompose the lexicality, called morphemic analysis, and after decomposing the smallest meaning units, then it will conduct syntactic analysis, and finally semantic analysis to understand the meaning. For the output part, natural language processing, is also closely related to generative grammar. Generative grammar theory holds that clauses can be generated as long as rules are followed. This also means that it is possible to generate articles simply by putting the rules together.

 

The most iconic application in natural language processing is the Chatbot, a human-like program that talks to people via text messages. in 2016, Facebook launched the 'Facebook Messenger Platform' and Line launched the 'Messaging API', which brought this NLP-enabled chatbot to the forefront.

Reflection

Since this project was a solo project, I had the honor of completing the full project assignment independently. Of course, from studying each project to making design decisions, I've learned a lot. At the same time, I also realized how important project self-management skills are to project scheduling and task tracking  as a good service designer.

 

Back to the issue: the future of tech ethics, something I've been thinking about for a few years now. Is there an outline principle between people and technology? In this interviews, I also think more creatively based on predictions of the future, I interviewed AI ethicists, algorithm experts, data and social media experts, Internet people.... I also found American cognitive psychologists to explore the secrets of human cognition while facing the technological age. I believe this will be a very critical and important issue in the future of the digital world, and there are many design opportunities within it that are worth exploring.


There's a lot of sentimentality in this. Many times, research is like an experiment. I find exploring the future of lifestyle to be a very interesting topic and a main thread of my research.Based on my passion for psychology, I hope to have more opportunities to explore it. We are already in a post-truth era where all information needs to be carefully chewed, how do we survive in the information world of the future? I will continue to explore for that.
